Patch panels are used in well
designed and implemented cable systems for data and phone hooks
up. Patch panel configurations can be in may sizes. For example
12 port to 96 port on one patch panel.
This will sit between the
horizontal cable runs that come from your various computer
locations or phone locations and to a central place, like
an equipment closet. - It is here that you would cross connect
the Cat 5 or Cat 6 or whichever type you are using, to the 110
IDC style punch downs on the back of the panel. In the front
there are RJ45 style female connectors.
You would then plug a patch
cord into the RJ45 and run it to the hub or switch ports that
you will be connecting to. You should use stranded cable for the
patch cords for they are flexible to take movement. You should
also be certain to fasten or secure the patch cords with proper
cable management hardware to keep the from moving.
